Improperium Expectavit – SATB, SSAA, or TTBB

This original setting of Improperium Expectavit is my first composition of 2026. I first composed the SSAA version. The range not being too broad, the TTBB version is exactly the same only an octave down. Finally, the SATB version swaps the two middle voices, dropping S2 into the Tenor range. The SATB version is just slightly different in consolantem me to avoid parallel fifths, which were parallel fourths before the inversion of the inner lines.

Notes

  • There is a single low F in the piece, but it could be sung an octave up, if necessary.
  • At measure 64, there should be a lift after the fermata, but the computer playback holds the note rather long and does not take a lift there.

SSAA

TTBB (or TBrBrB)

In this arrangement, the two inner voices could easily be sung by baritones, with even the top and bottom lines possible for some baritones (high F on top and low F on the bottom).
